In November of 2016, students from the North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP) After School Enrichment Program at Yeager Elementary School took a field trip to Discover Consumer Banking where they had the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of what makes a company run. In addition to tours of the company’s mail room, cafeteria, and marketing department, where students received a deep-dive explanation of the important role each department plays in the day-to-day operations of the company, they were able to meet the employees  and hear personal stories of the passions, skills and educational paths that got them to where they are.

Following the tours, students and employees from Discover broke up into small groups to complete educational enrichment activities focused on functions of the departments they visited. Students wrote letters of thanks to their volunteers, placed them in envelopes and learned the proper way to address them; students and their buddies were given a budget of $20.00 to order lunch and got to choose from a menu of foods of different cost to see what they could afford; and finally, the groups played a game of “Logo Memory,” where they had to match the names of famous companies with their iconic logos.

The afternoon concluded with students learning about what it means to be a good corporate citizen, as well as the department in a company focused on Corporate Social Responsibility. Before saying goodbye to one another, students and their buddies each wrote down one way that they were going to commit to being a better friend or family member through the end of the year.
